Why you are thinking about balance all wrong!
We have these recurring thoughts about balance:
The perfect work/life balance.
The perfect balance of being with your spouse and being with your kids.
The perfect balance of eating healthy foods while enjoying meals with your family.
But let’s take a more realistic look at balance.
Imagine you’re standing on a ball or a balance beam. Unless you are a professional gymnast or acrobat, you’re likely to be swaying side to side and to and fro.
That’s pretty normal.
While you are swaying, you pass through, briefly, that moment of perfect balance.
And then it’s gone.
That’s what real balance is.
Leaning one way when it’s called for, and then leaning another way when that is called for.
When you’re at work, you should be all in, focused on the task at hand, and not distracted by what’s going on at home.
When you’re at home, you should be similarly all in, focused on your family, and not distracted by what’s waiting for you at work.
Don’t be hard on yourself searching for the perfect balance. It’s not there.
Instead, focus on where you are right now, who you’re with right now, and what you’re doing right now.
Instead of searching for balance, strive to be present.
That’s a worthy goal to shoot for!
