Why walking isn’t enough

Many people I meet have one form of exercise: Walking.

Walking is amazing on many different levels.

My favorite part about walking is that it gets you outside. The benefits reaped from being outside are many, including improving your mood, your breathing, and your sleep.

An underrated part of walking is the complimentary bilateral movement, which actually helps improve neural connections in the brain. (It’s true! Look it up!)

It also helps to keep your legs strong, and your core too, particularly if you choose to walk with a weight vest.

However,

Walking alone isn’t sufficient!

If you truly want to be healthy, you must strength train!

Strength training (lifting weights) will help you…

Keep your metabolism healthy, as muscle “burns” more calories than fat.

Stay stronger overall, so you can be more independent as you age.

Decrease your risk of falling, as strong legs are better able to move you safely and improve your balance.

Improve your mobility, provided you have a coach insisting you work through your entire range of motion.

Strengthen your skeletal system by putting your bones under good stress.

And improve your mood…endorphins, baby!

It also improves your connection to a community, particularly when you are working out with friends!

If you’re not sure where to start, that’s ok, because we do! At Revity3, we specialize in helping people get started with weight training, focusing on form and safety with two coaches on the mat at all times.

So enjoy your walks, but don’t forget the weights!
