She was taken aback…
It’s rare that I see someone literally taken aback by something I say, but it happened.
A client was talking to me about her nutrition and explaining how she eats when she is stressed and does not make good food choices.
I explained that I did too, and she literally went silent for a second or two, moved slightly backwards as if I had pushed her, looked me up and down, and down and said “You?!”
Yes.
The people you see with perfect bodies on social media may live a perfect, virtuous existence. They only eat kale and beans, exercise for hours every day, then do yoga outside under a canopy with tropical breezes blowing, and then meditate to calm their inner spirit.
Whatever.
I live in the real world, with all the ups and downs, wins and losses, good days and bad, just like everyone else.
I have always drowned my stress and sorrows in delicious refined carbs: mainly cookies and bread.
And I have been known to have gone off the rails, down the embankment, and into several trees more times than I can count.
Here’s one key:
More often than not, I’m engaging in healthy behaviors that more than offset the “bad” choices I make.
And those behaviors are nothing crazy:
I move (lifting heavy weights to build muscle, doing challenging cardio for my heart, and many things in between).
I nourish my body (lots of water, lots of veggies, plenty of lean protein).
And I recover (stretching, yoga, sauna, breathing).
I try to live by the 80/20 rule…well, for me, it’s more like the 80/15/5 rule:
80% of the time I’m moving, nourishing, and recovering the right way, doing the right things for my health.
15% I’m less than perfect but not far off of the path.
5% of the time? Woof! You’d think it was my last day on this earth! 🤣
Here’s the other key:
I don’t stay in that 5% space for long. If you do, it’s not 5% anymore. It gets larger and larger. When it does, that’s when things go awry.
If you don’t know what your 80% is or should be, please ask!
