Are you the same?
Think back to the most impactful parts of your life. Perhaps they were traumatic, or perhaps they were joyful, but either way, they left an indelible mark on your life.
Puberty.
Getting married.
Getting divorced.
Having a child.
Having another child.
The death of a loved one.
Starting a new job.
Getting laid off.
Graduating college.
Getting injured or sick.
Menopause.
Think about those things without emotion. Don’t revisit them or relive them right now. Just look at them as if they happened to someone else.
Now, ask yourself this simple question: Were you the same person after those experiences that you were before those events?
Probably not.
Another question: Did you come out as a better version of yourself?
Probably so.
Why?
Because getting through any major life event involves changes in your brain. It literally rewires itself in response to events like the one listed above.
That rewiring makes you more resilient.
Resiliency isn’t something that you are born with.
You build it. Cultivate it. Earn it.
It isn’t always easy, but being able to cope with whatever comes your way is amazing, and everything you go through, good or bad, makes you even more resilient.
