A lesson from Project Runway (Part 1)…
Remember that show? Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn?
Her line is in my head to this day: In fashion, one day you’re in, and the next you’re out.
This is true in so many areas other than fashion, including the world that I play in: health.
For example: I have been begging people to eat protein for two decades, and now it’s in vogue. Finally!
Now it’s everywhere. In fact, you can easily go into any store and buy pasta, milk, bread, bagels, cookies, chips, and cereals fortified with protein.
Why is this important? Protein is what makes up so much of our bodies, including bone, skin, hair, and muscles. Our bodies use protein to make our hormones. Our immune system is made up of antibodies, which are proteins.
Here’s the thing that’s missing from Heidi’s quote…
The classics never go out of style.
A slinky black dress or a navy blue suit will always have a place in one’s wardrobe.
Similarly, carbohydrates and fats are also vital parts of our nutrition and shouldn’t be eliminated.
When I talk about carbs and fats though, I’m referring specifically to unprocessed whole grains, vegetables, and fruits for the former, and natural, mostly unsaturated, fats for the latter.
Bread baked with sugar (I’m looking at you Dave!!) and partially hydrogenated oils are examples of unhealthy carbs and fats.
I have said this to clients so many times they are sick of hearing it: You need to eat the right amounts of the right foods.
It’s kinda that simple, really.
It’s simple, but it’s not always easy. And it can be “not easy” for a massive variety of reasons.
