Stop Waiting for the Right Time: Why Strength Training Matters as You Age
Man over 40 strength training with dumbbells at Revity3 fitness studio in Wilton, CT
The other day, my wife read me a passage from a book she was reading, A Man Called Ove.
I don’t remember the entire passage, but one phrase stuck with me:
Time optimist.
It’s such a wonderful phrase, and after more than 25 years of coaching, I think it perfectly describes something I’ve heard again and again.
We all think we have more time.
“I’ll work out when my schedule calms down.”
“I’ll eat better starting Monday.”
“I’ll take that trip once the kids are out of college.”
“I’ll spend more time with my friends when our schedules finally line up.”
“I’ll buy that sports car when I retire.”
Maybe that last one is just me.
But here's the problem with being a time optimist:
Time isn't an infinite resource.
It Doesn't Feel Like Time Is Moving That Fast
It seems like yesterday that we were graduating from high school, starting our first jobs, and having kids.
And now our kids are graduating from high school, starting their first jobs, and having kids of their own.
Life has a funny way of making the years feel slow while we're living them and incredibly fast when we look back.
And that matters when it comes to your health and fitness.
Because while we can put things off for another month, year, or decade, our bodies don't hit pause while we're waiting for the "right" time.
Build Strength for the Life Ahead
For people over 40, fitness isn't just about losing weight or fitting into a certain size.
Strength training over 40 is about building and maintaining the physical capacity to enjoy the life you've worked so hard to create.
Maintaining muscle as you age, along with balance and stability training, can help support the things that make everyday life—and the years ahead—more enjoyable.
Traveling. Hiking. Playing with your grandchildren. Carrying groceries. Getting up and down from the floor. Doing the things you love without constantly wondering whether your body can keep up.
That's the idea behind strength training for longevity and healthy aging.
It's not about turning back the clock.
It's about preparing your body for what's ahead.
You Don't Need Hours at the Gym
Getting stronger doesn't require spending hours in a gym.
Consistent 30-minute workouts can be a practical way to make strength training part of a busy life.
You don't have to wait for your schedule to become calm. For most of us, that day isn't coming.
Instead, find an approach that fits into the life you have right now.
So, What Are You Waiting For?
Maybe you've been waiting for work to slow down.
Maybe you've been waiting until the kids need you less.
Maybe you've been waiting for more energy—or simply the "right" time.
Here's the thing:
The right time probably isn't going to magically appear.
Start today.
Not tomorrow.
Do the thing you've been putting off.
Take care of your body. Build your strength. Invest in your future self.
Because none of us knows exactly how much time we have.
But we can choose what we do with the time we have today.
We'll see you at Revity3.
